Dear Somos Primos and Friends:

This month I was the monthly speaker for the Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research, SHHAR, a group that I helped co-found thirty years ago. I used to take my grandchildren to heritage events which SHHAR organized or participated in. My grandchildren are now married with their own children.  Time certainly passes swiftly, meaningful steps along the way sometimes forgotten.

However, time can gives perspective. My focus has been to seek out our ancestral history with facts and honesty for greater understanding of the present. It has been a slow unfolding, revealing Spain's importance globally. Only recently did I realize the role of the horse in all of it. The more I researched it, the more I saw the role of the Spanish horse in all of it.

You've been hearing about the SPANISH PRESENCE IN AMERICAS ROOTS, SPAR Initiative since the start of the year. Our committee of history activists is moving forward, launching a fund raising program to protect a herd of horses in Madera, California whose DNA is traceable back to the Spanish horses first brought into the Americas in the early 1500s.
Hopefully you will be moved to support this effort financially.

The horses are living proof of our Spanish/Mexican/Latino contributions to the very foundation of the United States. Complete information is found under the Heritage Projects section. I compare the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804-6, with the explorations of our Spanish ancestors from the 1500-1800s, substantiated by a map included under the Early Latino Patriots, El Virreinato de Nueva Espana, and introduce Robin Collins and her great dedication to "her ponies".

May SPAR's spirit peak your interest.
Warmly, Mimi
