Dear Primos and Friends:
Hope you are all looking forward to a fun summer with family adventures.
I will be welcoming home a grandson that served a two-year church mission
in the Dominican Republic. He learned first hand a life-style totally
foreign to his middle class upbringing, such as showering with a garden
hose and finding mice in his refrigerator.
We have a wonderful country, with lots still to be done. Pointing out just
a couple of articles: Under UNITED STATES, Wanda Garcia's article
includes a copy of a letter from President Clinton (1 Dec 1972) to Dr.
Hector P. Garcia and a Western Union telegram from Dr. Martin Luther King
to Dr. Hector P. Garcia, (6 Mar 1968). Both letters speak to civil rights
problems and the need for more mutual understanding between races.
Under ACTION ITEMS you'll find a series of exchanges concerning the naming
of a US Cargo ship after Cesar Chavez vs naming it for. Marine Sgt. Rafael
Peralta. The conclusion was, of course, to honor both. Needed is action
to promote the heroic sacrifice of Sgt. Peralta, from the Navy Cross to the
Medal of Honor, and further to name a US Navy Ship after him.
Political cartoonist Sergio Hernandez, from Los Angeles, sent a Memorial
Day cartoon. Another artist shared too. Jose Bacedoni from Spain, sent an
ink sketch of 'Las Tres Carabelas' to accompany an article by long time
Somos Primos columnist Angel, Custodio Rebollo.
Another very full issue. Please, do remember to let it load completely
before moving around within it.
I invite each and everyone to send stories about what is happening in your
area. Just send me the names of the newspaper article, date, and reporter,
and I can find it, or if you have spotted some outstanding websites, share
the URL.
God bless America, Mimi
